Trekker Program

The Trekker program is for children ages 12 to 14. Trekkers are the only group of campers that leave the site. Trekkers learn canoeing skills on the lake at Penn and rock-climbing skills on our climbing wall and high ropes course. The group then leaves site and canoes on the Dan River, a low-class rapid river, and rock climbs at Pilot Mt State Park. The group camps one night at Pilot Mt State Park. The Campout takes place Wednesday night. During the campout, campers will stay in 4 man tents that they set up themselves. They will prepare and cook their own meals over an open fire. Trekkers must spend most of their time preparing and learning specialized skills for the trip. Therefore, the Trekker group will not be involved in the normal camp activity rotation such as horseback riding, craft, etc. Understand that the safety of all participants is the first priority and the Center reserves the right to cancel trips in the event of inclement weather or unforeseen circumstances. The group is under the supervision of trained and experienced instructors at a staff to participant ratio of 1:6. Off-site travel for the Trekker group will be provided using passenger vans. Leader In Training (L.I.T.) ages 15-17

This opportunity was developed to help guide older youth (15-17) as they hone and develop their leadership skills. The program runs concurrently - and intertwined with - the weekly residential summer camp. There are 12 spaces available during each session of camp, six for boys and six for girls. Assigned to a staff mentor for the week, Leaders-in-Training spend part of their time working on program set-up and "behind-the-scenes" details. They also participate in specific training exercises, team building, high ropes, and other leadership opportunities. Since L.I.T.'s are depended on for full & responsible participation throughout the week, they must go through an application process prior to being accepted for the program.

For more info and to apply for the L.I.T Program, review the Leader In Training Application Materials (pdf)

There are other Specialty Camps available at North Carolina 4-H Camps across the state.

Facilities, Equipment & Food

When on site, campers sleep in modern cabins with multiple indoor showers and restroom facilities. Campers bring their own sleeping bags or bed linens, as well as clothing and toiletries. Betsy-Jeff Penn provides all the specialized equipment needed for all aspects of each specialty camp. Nutritious, balanced menus are served family-style in Penn's dining hall, three times a day.
